The History of Thai food


Thai food is a cuisines combined of Eastern and Western influences. Spicy, salty, sweet, sour and bitters flavors combined to create each unique dish. Traditional Thai cooking involved stewing and baking, or grilling. Chinese influences moved into Thailand somewhere around 1400 years ago and introducedfrying, stir-frying and deep-frying. Culinary influences from the 17th century onwards included Portuguese, Dutch, French and Japanese. Portuguese missionaries brought chilies into Thailand from South America in the late 1600’sOther ingredients used in Thai food are, coconut milk, rice, aquatic animals, plant and herbs, Lap (spicy minced meat or chicken) fruits and vegetables A traditional Thai meal consists of rice with many complementary dishes such as stir-fried vegetables, soup such as Tom Yam Kung or Tom Cha Kai, curry, salad, noodles and spicy beef, or chicken followed by a traditional Thai desertsuch as Sweet sticky rice with papaya. The meal is served on a table family style.
